(Tipmas) My Best Tip Ever - thread storage

Biggie and small

Biggie and small

Today’s blog post is gong to be shorter than most - but it also contains my very best tip EVER for thread storage and management. I kept making the same mistake repeatedly, until I came face to face with what that mistake had cost me - in money, and in frustration. And to add insult to injury - whiile this is a very lovely shade of deep purple…I have yet to make a deep purple quilt requiring that much thread. It’s Superior’s King Tut color 948…in case you were wondering.

I used to keep my thread in a central location in my room, but I developed a really bad habit of putting the spools of thread into the project sack box along with the project. That’s great if you’re going to be putting it to use in the next week or so (or packing for a retreat). If, however, it’s likely to be months before you get to it (and yes, I am an optimist!), then Put a note into the project with all your thread notes, and keep the thread in a central location.

It’s much more efficient to keep the threads together from a shopping point of view. You know what you have, and can easily see if you need to restock when you get notice of a sale. In this case, I overbought this because I didn’t have a good handle on what I already had. A cross check would be to keep a list of which projects thread 123 is destined for - you might need to buy more.

I’ve used this tip for several years now, and I have had no more surprises of this kind.

Have you ever over bought thread? Just between us…
