(Tipmas) My Last Sewing Machine

They say you save the best for last, and at least with me and sewing machines, that’s true. This blog post is meant for those of you who do not sew on the machine ‘of your dreams’, or even something that functions properly.

I know about this because while today, I sew on a fabulous Janome machine which most likely is my last, that wasn’t always the case. The 8900qcpSE at right is the latest in a series of Janomes I have owned. They are a quality brand, and I work (although not often) with a great dealer here in my state, and I have always been pleased with the quality and value the brand represents.

The attachment above is one of my favorites for my machine - and it was worth it. Merry Christmas to me, 2019 - and I’ve used it every single sewing day in 2020. It’s a magnifier attachment with 3 powers which attaches to the machine. It’s amazing, your work becomes more accurate the better you can see.

I currently still own two Janomes (I traded in one, and sold the other via a private sale), and my 4 year old granddaughter (aka The Little Quilter, of LQ) enjoys sewing on the smaller of the two when she comes to have a mini-retreat with Nana. The only accomodation we have to make is to put the foot pedal on a box so she can work it.

She’s fascinated with the combination of fancy threads and fancy stitches! This is how you reach the younger generation.

The Tip of the Day…

While I love my Janome, one of the frustrations I’ve often found with sewing machines is how to know what name goes with which foot. The feet are labeled, and in the manual, it does go into detail as to what each foot does once it’s attached. Some to me were intuitive, some were not. Although there are boxes available for this function, and some of the newer models include that - mine did not. I took an empty case from a set of Autiful thread, and I wrote up a conversion chart - and labeled everything. Game Changer

The Beast (she says lovingly)

The Beast (she says lovingly)

I fell in love with this model when I realized that with a push of a button, it actually has a legitimate, accurate 1/4” seam allowance on this model. Although I’m not prone to impulse purchases, when I sat down with this one at a show a few years back, and walked through the demo with the sales technician - I knew within seconds that this was something I wanted. Janome has introduced additional models since this one, and there are some nice features (better lighting comes to mind), but this machine has more than enough power for me. It’s called the Beast because it’s not a lightweight model - and when I take it with me to a class or a retreat (remember those?) - this is a heavy model.
